There were high expectations around Syracuse that the Orangemen would see their second consecutive post season appearance. The team returned all the roster except for Lew Spicer, and the team had the dynamic scoring duo of Billy Gabor and Eddie Stickel. The Orangemen did not disappoint early in the year with easy wins over the first five games. They would use a fast pace tempo all season, mostly with successful results.
Gabor would score 32 points in the opening win against Boston University. Syracuse would have a close game against a formidable Bowling Green team. Gabor would hit a basket as time expired to send the game into overtime, which the Orangemen would win 72-70. A couple of games later, the team faced a similar situation. Gabor hit a basket as time expired, to win the game. Except the basket was ruled to have come after the buzzer, so the Orangemen and Spartans went into overtime. Unfortunately the Spartans would prevail 61-57, giving the Orangemen their first loss of the season.
The Orangemen ran their record up to 16-2 and fans thought that post season play was a certainty. However the team would stumble, losing three of the next four. The Orangemen had a large lead at halftime against Canisius, but ended up losing the game as the Griffins surged back to win 67-58.
The Orangemen would finish the season at 18-5, and the feeling was that an NCAA playoff berth would come to either them, CCNY, or Columbia. It was decided that Syracuse and CCNY would have a playoff game to earn their way into the tournament. The CCNY game was close, but ultimately CCNY won 61-59.
