Lew Spicer played two years of basketball for Syracuse University. His senior season he was co-captain with Billy Gabor on the first Syracuse team to play in the post season, as the Orangemen went 23-4. He started at guard and was an outstanding perimeter shooter with a solid set shot.
Spicer was a terrific athlete, also lettering in football at Syracuse in 1944. Spicer was on the varsity basketball team in 1942-1943, but did not play. Instead served in the military in World War II. He would return to Syracuse in the fall of 1944.
Spicer graduated with a law degree in 1946. He would sign with the Providence Steamrollers of the NBA, and played briefly one season there (listed as Lou Spicer).

Spicer would practice law for several years in the Watertown area. Spicer was the assistant city corporation counsel from 1948 to 1959. He was the Jefferson County Republican Election Commissioner from 1967 until his death in 1982.
