Syracuse opened the 1948-1949 season with a doubleheader at the Syracuse Coliseum, the only doubleheader in Syracuse basketball history. Syracuse beat Toronto 76-34, and led 30-19 at half time. Lew Andreas would use 19 players in that game; Jack Kiley would lead all scorers with 12 points.

In the second game, Syracuse would beat Ithaca College 81-41, and would lead at halftime 40-19. Ithaca led for the first 3 minutes of the game, but then Syracuse took over. Vosbrink of Ithaca College fouled out after only 11 1/2 minutes of play of the first half of the game. Ed Stickel would lead all scorers in the second game with 19 points. Syracuse switched their jerseys at half time of the game, switching from their white jerseys, to their orange jerseys. The 81 points Syracuse scored in the game was a record for the Syracuse Coliseum, at that time. Syracuse played 17 players and Ithaca College 14, for a combined 31 players in the contest.

Jack Kiley and Stickel would lead all scorers in the doubleheader with 25 points each. Bob Savage would have 20 and Francis Miller 17. Syracuse started the same five for both games. Sixteen Syracuse players would play in both games. The only players who did not were George Jarvis, Bob Wallach, and Hank Schultz who played only in the first game, and Tom Jockle who played only in the second.
