The season would be the ultimate Boeheim family affair with Jimmy Boeheim transferring to Syracuse to join his younger brother Buddy and his father head coach Jim. Several players departed from the previous season so Cole Swider and Symir Torrence also transferred to the Orange. The team would be a three point shooting focused offense with four starters proficient from that distance, Buddy Boeheim leading the way. Jesse Edwards would be the loan inside presence. The team would indeed be quite effective scoring, but they also were fairly weak defensively.
The team would win its first two games before an embarrassing 100-85 loss to Colgate, snapping a 54 game winning streak the Orange had against the Red Raiders. Syracuse would go 1-2 in the Battle for Atlantis tournament in the Bahamas, beating Arizona State while losing to Virginia Commonwealth and Auburn.
Syracuse would beat Indiana 112-110 in double overtime in the Big 10/ACC Challenge. Syracuse had a 88-85 lead with 2.6 seconds left in regulation when they fouled Khristian Lauder and put him to the line. He made his first free throw, and intentionally missed his second. Syracuse's Benny Williams fouled Indiana's Trayce Jackson-Davis on the rebound, and Indiana tied up the game when he made both free throws. The two teams were tied after one overtime. Joe Girard made two free throws with 0.8 seconds left to win the game at the end of the second.
Syracuse would lose to a weak Georgetown game before a Covid outbreak affected the team. The Lehigh game would be canceled and the Cornell game postponed a week.
The Orange would lose six of their first eight ACC games, a few by close scores. Syracuse blew an eighteen point first half lead against Miami, eventually losing by one. Against Wake Forest, Syracuse had a 1 point lead and the ball with 10 seconds remaining. The Orange turned over the inbounds pass, and the Demon Deacons tied up the game and sent it into overtime. Wake Forest would win in overtime.
After the poor stretch of play the Orange started to find some defensive rhythm and won four in a row. Buddy would score 30 points in a rematch game against Wake Forest and added seven assists and three steals to his effort. Freshman Benny Williams was starting to find his cadence, and Frank Anselem was backing up Edwards well, replacing an oft injured Bourama Sidibe.
Unfortunately any chance of turning the season around ended when Edwards broke his wrist against Boston College on February 8th. The Orange would win 2 of the next 3 before losing their last four regular season games. Syracuse did take North Carolina to overtime behind a strong 36 point effort by Cole Swider. Joe Girard it a basket near expiration to send the game to overtime, but North Carolina ran away with the game in overtime. Syracuse would lose to Miami in the next game after holding an 18 point lead.
In the ACC tournament the Orange played exceptionally well in the first game easily beating Florida State 96-57. Swider led the way with 28 points and 13 rebounds, and Anselem came off the bench with 15 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 9 points. Unfortunately for the Orange, Buddy Boeheim punched Florida State's Wyatt Wilkes in the stomach. The officials missed the call, but reviewed it after the game and suspended him for the next game.
Jimmy Boeheim would play inspired against Duke to cover up for the loss of Buddy, scoring 28 points while making 6 of 9 three point shots. The Orange led 79-78 with 2:57 to go and looked poised to pull the big upset. Unfortunately Duke would score the last ten points of the game.
The loss would give Jim Boeheim his first losing season, and the Orange's first losing season since 1968-1969.
