Syracuse returned only two starters from the previous season with seniors Joe Girard and Jesse Edwards leading the way. Jim Boeheim had a large freshman class coming aboard with guard Judah Mintz the biggest name. Freshman Chris Bell, Maliq Brown, Justin Taylor, and Quadir Copeland were expected to join sophomore Benny Williams to provide help.

Unfortunately the Orange would struggle all season find their offensive identity and to make Boeheim's zone defense work. The team would have embarrassing early season losses to Colgate, St. John's, Bryant, and Illinois, and had to go overtime to beat Richmond. The team had put itself in a hole with a 3-4 start during what should have been the easier part of the schedule.

There were some bright spots in the season. Edwards would scored 22 points and have 16 rebounds in a close 62-61 game against Notre Dame. Freshman Mintz hit a baseline drive with 13 seconds remaining to give the Orange the lead, one that they would hold.

The Orange easily beat Georgetown 83-64 at the Dome behind Edwards 20 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 blocks. Mintz would have 10 assists and 5 steals, making 10-11 free throws. And seldom used John Bol Ajak came off the bench with a stat stuffing game of 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 5 points.

Syracuse would have an 11 point second half lead over #17 Miami, before the Hurricane's came back and took the lead with 3:48 remaining. The Orange had a chance to shoot for the win, but Mintz turned over the ball with 25 seconds remaining. Miami would eventually win 82-78.

The Orange would lose 7 of 10 games, many by double digit margins. The bright spot in that string was a 75-72 win over #23 North Carolina State. The Orange trailed 70-67 with just over 3 minutes to play. Edwards would make a nice pass to Mintz who would make a three to tie the game at 2:42. After Syracuse stopped the Wolfpack on their next possession, Mintz returned the favor and fed Edwards the ball for a lay up, where he was also fouled. Edwards would make the lay up and free throw and the Orange would lead 73-70. The Wolfpack's D.J. Burns had a chance to tie it with his own free throw after a lay up but he missed. Mintz would be fouled with 24 seconds left and made both his free throws for a 75-72 lead. The Wolfpack would miss their three point attempt.

Syracuse would face Wake Forest in the ACC tournament. Syracuse trailed by 12 points 54-42 in the second half with about 12 minutes to play. The team would tie the game up 60-60 with 7:41 to go when Benny Williams made a tip in and free throw. Syracuse would take a 74-72 lead with a minute to play when Williams made a three pointer. Wake Forest tied the game back up with 35 seconds to go. Joe Girard missed a three point shot with 6 seconds left, and the Deacon's Daivien Williamson grabbed the rebound, raced down the court, and made a game winning three pointer at 0.3 seconds.

Shortly after the game it was announced that Jim Boeheim was retiring after 47 seasons, and Adrian Autry would replace him.
