Chris Bell was a forward for Syracuse basketball for three seasons, with a reputation as a solid perimeter shooter but weak defense.
Bell would start his freshman season as the starting small forward. He had a reputation for being an outstanding perimeter shooter but struggled to find his touch early in the season. He was weak at rebounding and struggled with the zone defense, resulting in reduced playing time. He would remain a starter until late in the season when he was benched a couple of games. He would score a season high 17 points in a win over Notre Dame.
Bell developed into one of the best three point shooters in the ACC his sophomore year. He was particularly good at spotting up for a shot in the corner. His shooting ran hot and cold, which impacted the rest of his game, but when he was hot there were few shooters that were better. He scored a season high 30 points in a win over Louisville on 8 of 10 three point shooting. He'd shoot the same from three in a big win over North Carolina State, this time resulting in 26 points. Bell still struggled defensively and rebounding, though he had improved.
Bell was counted on to be one of the leading scorers his junior year, but he had a disappointing season. He struggled to find open shot and his three point shooting was erratic all season. He lost his starting position after a loss to Wake Forest. In February he did come off the bench and scored 23 in a loss to Pittsburgh, making 7 of his 12 three point attempts.
He legally changed his last name to his mom's last name Bell when he got to Syracuse. Previously he had been known as Chris Bunch.
