The team started with the highest expectations since the Dave Bing era, with a preseason top 20 ranking. Three starters returned from the previous season's 24-5 team, including All American Dennis DuVal and big man Rudy Hackett. Jimmy Lee stepped into the starting lineup, and Bob Dooms returned to the center position. The fifth starter position was up for grabs, but Coach Danforth knew he had a couple of talented transfers in Kevin King and Fred Saunders, who would be eligible to play the second semester.

The team started out hot, winning its first six and 'Sweet D' DuVal threw in a couple of 30+ point games. Steve Shaw struggled at the small forward position, so high flying Chris Sease stepped into the starting role for a few games, before King became eligible. Unfortunately, the team went into a mini slump, losing 3 of 4.

Finally, Saunders, the highly touted senior transfer from Louisiana Lafayette was eligible, and he added some flash and muscle to the team. They would go 10-3 down the stretch and earn and NCAA bid.

In the first round they met Oral Roberts. It was a tight game, with Duval leading the way with 28 points. The scored was tied, and time was running out when Saunders spotted Hackett beneath the basket. Hackett went up for the layup and was fouled, missing the basket, with 7 seconds to go. Hackett went to the free throw line and missed both free throws, sending the game into overtime. Oral Roberts took a quick six point lead in the extra period, and Saunders and DuVal both fouled out. Syracuse remained tough and Lee hit a basket to pull the Orangemen within a pair, but that was as close as it would get as Oral Roberts held on for the 86-82 victory.
