Johnny Harwood was an outstanding athlete at Syracuse who played basketball for three seasons. He lettered three times in basketball and three times in track at Syracuse.

Johnny Harwood Syracuse Orangemen BasketballHarwood was exceptionally fast, and lead Syracuse in the 100 yard dash during his three seasons. He would be a starting forward on the basketball team his sophomore season.

His junior season, four exceptionally quick sophomores would join the team (Ev Katz, Dan Fogarty, Tuppy Hayman and Ken Beagle). Bart Shaw was designated to be the starting center when the season began, but he hurt his ankle, so Harwood moved to center. Though small for the position at 5'11", he was the fastest of the five players, giving the Orangemen one of the fastest basketball teams in the country. Harwood's speed would help him compensate for the lack of height and he played solid defense.

Harwood would be replaced by the lanky Slim Elliott his senior season, as Elliott provided much needed height for the Reindeer Five. Harwood would be a valuable reserve on that team.
