Ev Katz was part of the famed 'Reindeer Five' at Syracuse, a speedy fivesome that went 34-6 over two years. Katz played guard and developed a one handed set shot (several years ahead of Stanford's Hank Luisetti, who is generally regarded as inventing the shot). Katz also lettered in track at Syracuse, participating in the high jump, broad jump and pole vault.
He is generally regarded as one of the best Syracuse basketball players of the 30's, and was considered the fastest player on the speedy 'Reindeer Five'. Katz was a steady scorer for the Orangemen during his three years.
Katz coached at Syracuse's Cathedral High School for many years, and was a high school basketball referee. He played professional basketball for a few seasons with the Newark Elks. For 26 years he was a manager at Beneficial Finance Company.
Katz was the brother of Milt Katz, teammate in 1930-1931. Katz passed away in 1993.
