Ken Beagle was an outstanding athlete who was part of the fleet footed "Reindeer Five" of Syracuse, who went 45-10 over three seasons. Beagle was a fast player, with a nice left handed shot.
Beagle came to Syracuse on both a basketball and baseball scholarship. He had led Central High School to the City League championship and was a Central New York All-Star. He would play both sports at Syracuse in 1931, and was voted "best all around athlete" at Syracuse. Beagle was also an excellent student, becoming a member of the Phi Kappa Alpha honor society and was chairman of the student senate his senior year.
After graduation, Beagle briefly played professional basketball with the Newark Elks (with fellow former Orangemen Ed Sonderman, Johnny DeYoung and Lou Alkoff), and professional baseball with the Scranton Miners. From 1931-1933, he played for the Syracuse Shamrocks professional team.
From 1932 to 1953 he coached basketball for various Syracuse High School teams, the last 15 with his alma mater Central High School. Beagle led the team to five city league titles. From 1943 to 1960, he served as the Athletic Director at Central High, and was also the chairman of the business education department.
Beagle was inducted into the Syracuse Hall of Fame in 1992. He passed away in 1994.
