Lou Alkoff was a starter on the Syracuse basketball team for three seasons. He was a forward his first two seasons and a guard and team captain his senior season. Alkoff also played on the football team, lettering his senior season.
Alkoff was an excellent ball handler and solid defender. Alkoff was expected to be a reserve his sophomore season, but he played so well in practice and in the first couple of games that he replaced senior captain Whitey Bock in the starting lineup by the third game. He would remain a starter through the rest of his career.
He graduated from Syracuse in 1935 and went to medical school at Syracuse. Alkoff served in the army in World War II. He also played professional basketball briefly with the Newark Elks.
Dr. Louis Alkoff would be an ophthalmologist in Syracuse for several years, before retiring in 1983. He passed away in 1994.
