Comments:
Syracuse, seeded #11, would face the #3 seeded Michigan State Spartans, and #4 ranked, in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Syracuse's zone defense was in great form, and it perplexed the Spartans all day, preventing them from getting the ball inside.
It was a tight first half, with Michigan State having the lead at intermission 25-22 when Matt McQuaid made a 3 point shot at the buzzer. The Spartans would expand the lead to six points early in the second half, but never could pull away.
Syracuse's Frank Howard fouled out of the game with 6:49 remaining. The Orange would be forced to play walk-on Braedon Bayer for the rest of the game. He had played only a total of 11 minutes previously in the season.
The Spartans would lead by five with 5:43 to go, with the score 48-43. The Syracuse defense would hold Michigan State without a field goal for the remainder of the game. Marek Dolezaj was fouled with 4:23 to go; he made both free throws which gave Syracuse its first lead of the second half. It was a lead the Orange would never relinquish.
The Spartans had one last chance at the end of the game. Syracuse's Paschal Chukwu missed the second of two free throws with 2 second remaining that gave the Spartans a glimmer of hope. The Spartan's Cassius Winston missed a 45 foot shot at the buzzer, giving the Orange the win.
