Lew Castle was a two-time All-American (1912, 1914), and captained the Orangemen to an unbeaten season at 12-0 in 1913-1914. He led the Orange in scoring with 155 points, accounting for 42% of the scoring that season. He was described as being a Lew Castle Syracuse Orangemen Basketballvery strong player, and the best dribbler of his era.

Castle was a fine all-around student athlete, also lettering three years at halfback in football, leading the crew team to victory at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta, was the student body president, and a ragtime pianist/songwriter.

Castle was highly successful in business, serving as the secretary of the Detroit Stock Exchange and later as the head of the exhange. He died in December of 1952.
