Bucky Roche was a guard for Syracuse basketball for three seasons. Roche was also a star pitcher on the Syracuse baseball team.
Roche was a scrappy playmaker and a solid defensive player. Roche did not play much his sophomore season as it was a deep veteran team. His junior season he would evolve into a valuable reserve guard. He would start six games late in the season when Tom Jockle was injured.
Roche would be the starting point guard for the Orangemen his senior season, and the team would start the season very well, leading the nation in scoring. The team played an up tempo style and had an aggressive defense fueled by Roche. Against Cornell on January 5th, Syracuse was missing guards Bill Manikas and Stan Swanson due to illness. Roche stepped up big scoring a career high 35 points, in a close 81-79 victory. Roche would make 15 of 21 field goal attempts on a very hot shooting night.
Later in the season Roche would help ignite the Orangemen's rally to come back from 11 points down to rival Penn State, and to beat the Nittany Lions in double overtime.
Roche was drafted in the 7th round of the NBA draft by the Syracuse Nationals. He declined the opportunity to play as he had lined up a teaching position and would coach high school basketball.
