Ray Willmott played for Syracuse basketball for three seasons. He was also a pitcher on the Syracuse baseball team, lettering in 1941 and 1942.
Willmott would play both guard and forward for Syracuse. He was a top reserve his sophomore year, and would start several games. Willmott would continue to rotate in and out of the starting lineup his junior season. His senior year, he would be a starter for the entire year, providing the team with stability and leadership on the court. He would score a career high 13 points against Buffalo State in a lopsided victory.
Willmott would serve in the Navy's amphibious forces in World War II. He was involved in the invasion of Sicily in 1943, and seven invasions in the Pacific in 1944 and 1945. Willmott would earn the Navy-Marine Corps Medal and Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V. [1]
He would teach high school science for 28 years for Sleepy Hollow High School in Tarryton, New Jersey. He would coach the basketball, baseball, football, soccer, and golf teams. He was named his section's Soccer Coach of the Year in 1963. [2]
