Joe Sylvestri was a guard on the Syracuse basketball team for two seasons. Sylvestri was a talented stocky athlete who lettered in both basketball and baseball for the Orangemen.
Sylvestri would play guard his sophomore season. He would get his first start against Princeton, as the Orangemen had lost three games and coach Lew Andreas wanted to shake up the lineup. The Orange would win the game and would go on a modest winning streak, with Sylvestri starting several of those games. Sylvestri developed a reputation as being one of the best set shooters in college basketball his junior year [1].
Sylvestri was a star on the baseball diamond, playing shortstop and second base his sophomore and junior seasons, lettering both seasons.
Sylvestri would leave Syracuse to serve for the Marines in World War II. He would return to Syracuse after the war and graduate in 1947.
He would pass away in July, 1988.
