The Syracuse Orangemen and Niagara Purple Eagles first met in 1910, with the Purple Eagles winning handedly 30-20. The Orangemen would quickly reverse that winning the next eight games, and twelve of the next thirteen.
Syracuse would dominate the series up to 1950, with a 22-5 edge in the series. Niagara would start turning the series around shortly after that winning 17 of the next 26, and by 1963 the series was 31-22 in favor the Orange. Dave Bing would arrive at Syracuse and the Orangemen would then win the next seven. In 1968 and 1969, the Eagles had their own superstar in Calvin Murphy and he put on a shooting clinic against the Orangemen. In 1968 Murphy scored 50 points against Syracuse at Manley Field House. A year later, in Niagara, Murphy would score 68 points, then an NCAA record for most points in a Division I game, and still a record that still stands for most points by an individual against Syracuse.
Syracuse would start to reclaim the series in 1971, winning 14 of the next 15 games in the series. Syracuse would face Niagara twice in the ECAC playoffs, and the Orangemen would win both times on their way to the NCAA.
The two teams had played most every season from 1933 until 1982. The series then ended, as the Orangemen rose to prominence in the Big East. The two teams would not meet again for eighteen years until 2000. Syracuse has won the last 9 games in the series.
Calvin Murphy was not the only player to put up significant personal numbers in the Syracuse/Niagara series. Mel Besdin would score 31 against Niagara in 1953. Vinnie Cohen would have back-to-back games of 30 and 34 points in the 1956-1957 season. Jon Cincebox would score 26 points along with 22 rebounds in 1959. Dave Bing would score 37 points along with 17 rebounds in a 1965 victory. Big Bill Smith would score 41 points and 33 points in back-to-back games against Niagara in the 1968-1969 season, though both games were losses for the Orangemen.
Niagara has the distinction beating the Orangemen on February 28, 1962, handing the Orangemen their 27th consecutive loss, a school record and a NCAA record (at the time). Legendary Niagara Coach Taps Gallagher had a record of 21-29 versus the Orange (21 wins for Gallagher).
