Jack Larned was a playmaking guard for Syracuse basketball for four seasons. Larned had a reputation for being a good passer and a solid defender. He was a high school teammate of fellow Orangemen Connie Zimmick.
Larned was a reserve player his freshman season. He would start four games early in his sophomore season, before Pat Stark would replace him.
Larned would start every game his junior year. His scoring continued to improve as the season progressed, and he would score a career high 20 points in a loss to Army. Larned would score 15 or more points in five of the last six games of the season.
Larned was the team captain his senior year. The addition of four talented sophomores would reduce his scoring, and put him back into the position of primarily being a playmaker. The team struggled to be consistent with its scoring, and Manny Breland replaced Larned for the last seven games of the year.
