Johnny Gallivan played forward for Syracuse basketball for two seasons. Gallivan played center on the freshman team before joining the varsity as a sophomore.
Gallivan was making an early season impact his sophomore season. However, his academics slipped and he was declared ineligible to play the second semester. He would join the team again the following year, and again he would play in only one game before academic issues arose.
Gallivan would rejoin the team a year later. He would start the season at center, but would quickly shift to the forward position. When Bernie Kates re-injured his leg coach Eddie Dollard struggled to find another designated free throw shooter for the team. Gallivan would eventually earn that position. He would lead the team in scoring that year, and would have both the most field goals and most free throws.
Gallivan would quit the team in the fall of his senior season when he was unhappy being designated a reserve player instead of a starter [1]. He would instead play AAU basketball for Assumption Catholic Union.
