Bernie Kates played forward for Syracuse basketball for one season. He did not play often but was the best foul shooter on the team.

Bernie Kates - Syracuse BasketballKates served in the Army in World War I. He would enter Syracuse as a 21 year old freshman, and was the captain of the freshman basketball team. He injured his knee that season causing him to miss the end of the year.

Kates was inserted into the starting lineup in mid December of his sophomore year. He was the star of the victory over St. Lawrence, scoring 14 points, including going 12 of 17 from the free throw line. He would re-injure his knee in the next game against Heinz House. Unfortunately this would result in a recurring knee injury, and Kates would resign from the team in mid February.

He would work as a distributor in Syracuse for L.C. Forman Company for forty years, and then ten years with Marine Midland Bank. Bernard Kates passed away in September 1983. [1]
