The Syracuse Orangemen and West Virginia Mountaineers first met in 1917. The Orangemen won the first six games in the series; WVU would then win 11 of the next 17 to make the series 12-11 in favor of Syracuse (1976). Syracuse has gone 22-5 since then against the Mountaineers.
West Virginia joined the Big East Conference for the 1995-1996 series. Syracuse would have an 18-5 advantage over the Mountaineers in Big East play. The two school would meet only twice in the Big East Tournament, with the Orange winning both times. They met in the 2005 Big East Championship, and again in the 2009 Big East Semi-Finals. West Virginia joined the Big 12 after the 2011-2012 series.
Syracuse would meet the Mountaineers in the second round of the 2021 NCAA tournament. The Orange would upset West Virginia behind Buddy Boeheim's 25 points and a stellar zone defense to move on to the Sweet Sixteen.
Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim had a 9-4 record against WVU coach Gale Catlett, 6-0 against John Beilein and 6-1 against Bobby Huggins.
