The Syracuse Orangemen and Penn State Nittany Lions first played basketball in 1917 with Penn State winning a close game 22-21. Penn State would win 7 of the first 9 games the two teams played, spanning 1917-1926. The Orangemen would then win thirteen of the next fifteen games to take a 15-9 series lead.
The two teams played two games a season for most seasons from 1923-1924 through the 1978-1979 season. There was a break from 1944 to 1948 due to World War II. The two schools cancelled their last scheduled game in the 1942-1943 season because both teams had lost several players due to service obligations in the military.
Syracuse joined the Big East for the 1979-1980 season, and that started the end of the series. There was bitter feelings between Penn State and the rest of the Big East teams based on the configuration of the league, and the end result of Penn State being excluded. The two teams played three more games, and then ceased playing each other in basketball regularly after the 1981-1982 season.
Syracuse Coach Jim Boeheim is 9-1 all-time versus Penn State, and the Orange have won the last 11 games of the series. It is currently the fourth longest series in Syracuse history with 106 games played.
Seven Syracuse players have scored 30 or more points in a game against the Nittany Lions, the top being Jim Snyder's 34 points in 1956.
The Orangemen were 18-35 against the Nittany Lions at Penn State, 2-1 versus them on a neutral court, and 42-8 against them in Syracuse.
The two team would meet in 2019 in the NIT preseason tournament at the Barclay Center. The game was 37 years since the two teams last met. The Nittany Lions would win 85-64 behind an outstanding performance by center Mike Watkins with 15 points and 16 rebounds.
