The Syracuse Orangemen and the Georgetown Hoyas first met in 1930 with the Orangemen winning 40-18.
Syracuse and Georgetown both joined the Big East in its inaugural season 1979-1980, and the series became the biggest rivalry right from the start when Georgetown upset Syracuse in the last game at Manley Field House, ending Syracuse's 52 game home winning streak. John Thompson uttered the famous line 'Manley Field House is officially closed' after the game. Syracuse and Georgetown would finish their Big East rivalry with a fitting 36-36 record against each other. The two teams met each other 14 times in the Big East tournament, and split those games 7-7.
Syracuse had four five game winning streaks against Georgetown. The Hoyas had a six game and five game winning streak against the Orange.
Legendary Hoya coach John Thompson had a 26-21 record against Syracuse. Thompson was 25-21 versus Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim. Boeheim was 7-4 against Hoya coach Craig Esherick, 10-9 against John Thompson III, and 4-2 versus Patrick Ewing.
