The Syracuse Orangemen and Duke Blue Devils first met in the Elite Eight of the 1966 NCAA Tournament. The #2 ranked Blue Devils would win 91-81.
Syracuse and Duke first met in an ACC game in February 2014 in front of an NCAA record crowd. The Orange would win the game in overtime 91-89. The two teams would play three weeks later with Duke winning on a controversial charging call on C.J. Fair. That would be the first and only game Jim Boeheim's career that he was ejected.
Syracuse would beat Duke 64-62 in January 2016, giving the Orange their first win in Cameron arena. Tyler Roberson had 20 rebounds that night to lead the way.
Syracuse would upset Duke 95-91 in overtime in January 2019. Duke was the #1 ranked team in the nation, and Syracuse was 17 point underdogs. This would be the first time a #1 ranked Duke team ever lost at home to an unranked team. Tyus Battle led all Syracuse scorers with 32 points, while Pascal Chukwu pulled down 18 rebounds and had 10 points. Syracuse's Elijah Hughes made a 75 foot three point shot as time expired to end the first half. Duke's Zion Williamson scored 35 points and had 10 rebounds, while R.J. Barrett had 23 points and 16 rebounds.
Syracuse would again face #1 ranked Duke in February 2019, this time in front of an NCAA record crowd of 35,642. The Orange would lead 34-29 at the half, but the Blue Devils were too much in the second half as they pulled away in the last seven minutes to beat the Orange 75-65. R.J. Barrett would lead all scorers with 30 points, as Zion Williamson missed the game due to injury. The game was overshadowed by the tragic automobile accident involving Jim Boeheim the preceding Wednesday night. Boeheim was driving home after the Louisville game, swerved to avoid a disabled vehicle in the highway, and struck and killed Jorge Jimenez who was walking near the road.
