The Syracuse Orange and Cornell Big Red basketball series goes back to the first season of Orange varsity basketball. They played in the second game Syracuse ever played, and the Orangemen beat Cornell 18-15 for the first win in Syracuse basketball history. The Orangemen won the first three games of the series.
The two teams would not meet from 1906 to 1921, when the series once again resumed. They would play a home-and-home game from 1921 to 1930, an annual series from 1931 to 1938, and then again a home-and-home series from 1939 through 1968. From the 1968-1969 season until the 1992-1993 season, the two teams would again have an annual game. They would not meet from 1994 to 2000. In 2001 they two teams started to meet again on an occasional basis.
Cornell beat Syracuse eight straight times from 1921 to 1924, and once led the series 8-3. Syracuse would then win 9 straight games to give the Orangemen a 12-8 lead in the series. Syracuse would start to dominate the series and by 1957, the Orangemen led 44-17. However from 1957 to 1964, Cornell would win 12 out of 17 games in the series, including seven straight from 1959 to 1963, to bring the series to 49-29.
The Orangemen would then retake hold of the series. Cornell would last beat Syracuse in 1968. The Orange have now beaten Cornell 41 straight games.
The November 10, 2017 game would see Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim coach against his oldest son Jimmy Boeheim, who was making his college playing debut for the Big Red. Jimmy would score eleven points and lead his team in rebounding with five rebounds.
The December 1, 2018 game would be the Battle of the Boeheim's, as coach Jim Boeheim would again face off against his son Jimmy Boeheim. This time around, Jim's youngest son Buddy was also involved, as a freshman for the Syracuse Orangemen. Jimmy would score nine points with six rebounds and four assists for Cornell, while Buddy would score three points in five mintes for the Orange.
November 20, 2019 would be the Battle of the Boeheim's, round 2, with Jim Boeheim coaching, Buddy again playing for Syracuse, and Jimmy playing for Cornell. Jimmy Boeheim would lead all scorers with 25 points, while Buddy had 16 points, as the Orange won 72-53.
