The Syracuse Orange and UConn Huskies first played in 1956. UConn would be the first team Syracuse ever played in the NCAA tournament, when the two teams met in the first round of the 1957 tournament, with the Orangemen winning 82-76. The two teams started playing regularly, and in 1979-1980 both teams became part of the Big East Conference.
Syracuse held a 17-4 advantage over Connecticut before the conference began. Syracuse held a 37-33 advantage over Connecticut in Big East Play. The two teams met fourteen times in the Big East Tournament with the Orange winning eight of those games.
Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim and UConn coach Jim Calhoun met 54 times in Big East play, and the series was split 27-27. Boeheim was 13-5 against Huskie coach Dom Perno.
The Orange and Huskies have gone into overtime six times, with the Orange holding a 5-1 advantage in those games. The most memorable was the six overtime game in the Big East quarterfinals in March of 2009, which the Orange eventually won 127-117. Syracuse never led in any of the overtime periods until the sixth overtime. The game is the longest game ever in NCAA postseason history.
