The Syracuse Orange and Colgate Raiders first met in basketball in 1902. Since then, Syracuse the 166 games it has played against Colgate are more than against any other school. The two schools basically played twice every season from 1902 through 1969. The game was often deemed the most prestigious game on the schedule and was given the honor of being the last game of the year.

Starting with the 1969-1970 season the two teams would start to play one game a year. In the 1976-1977 season, the game move from a late season game to an early season game.

The two teams did not play in the 1979-1980 season, nor in the 1982-1983 season. Then the series was halted from 1985-1986 through 1992-1993. The series resumed in the 1993-1994 season and has been played ever since. The last game played in Hamilton was December 7, 1977.

The series was a very competitive one for quite a while. It was tied up 14-14 after the 1916 season. Syracuse would have some winning streaks, but even in the 1950s and 1960s it was still a competitive game. Syracuse, led by Dave Bing's 45 points, beat Colgate 93-90 in February of 1965. After that point Syracuse started to dominate Colgate on the scoreboard. A couple of close games in the late 60s early 70s, but Syracuse kept winning. Syracuse would defeat Colgate 54 consecutive times until the Red Raiders upset the Orange 100-85 in 2021.

Syracuse has won fifty four straight games against Colgate, going back to 1963. Colgate had won four straight before that streak, from 1960 to 1962. There have been eight overtime games in the series, with the Orange having a 5-3 edge in those games. Syracuse was 3-1 in single overtime, 1-2 in double overtime and 1-0 in triple overtime against Colgate.

Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim is 31-2 versus Colgate, and Mike Hopkins won his first game as a head coach against Colgate on 12/8/2015.
