The Syracuse Orange and the Canisius Golden Griffins first met in 1945. The two teams would play twice a season from 1945-1946 through the 1960-1961 season, and then played annually from 1961-1962 through 1990. The series was on hold for twelve years, until the Orange and Golden Griffins met again in 2002. The two teams have played every other season since then.
Canisius won the first three games in the series, and once had a 7-2 series lead (1949), and a 21-16 series lead (1963). Canisius won five straight games from 1961 to 1963. Syracuse has gone 30-3 in the series since that point, and has won 21 straight games since 1976.
Canisius became a team that individual Syracuse players would have great games. Ed Stickel scored 38 points against Canisius in 1949, setting a Syracuse school record. Three seasons later, Ed Miller would score 40 points against Canisius, becoming the first Orangeman to score 40+ in a game. Frank Reddout would score 40 against the Griffins in 1953 to become the second Orangeman to score 40+ in a game. Pete Chudy, Dave Bing, Greg Kohls, Rudy Hackett and Billy Owens would join the list of players to score 30+ points against Canisius.
Former Syracuse great Art Powell coached Canisius from 1944-1946 at the end of his career, compiling a 20-22 record with the Golden Griffins. Powell would go 3-1 against his former Orangemen as the Griff's coach.
