Bob Murray played center for Syracuse University for three seasons. He and classmate Jim Seaman were teammates at Linton High School, where the team won 31 consecutive games in Section II.
Murray was an undersized center at 6'3", on a team that was undersized overall. He would see less and less playing time each year. Murray would hit the game winning basket with a layup against Boston College in March of his sophomore year, allowing Syracuse to snap their 27 game losing streak.
His playing time would drop significantly his senior year as seniors Carl Vernick, Seaman, and himself were the least used players on the team. However, he had a huge moment in the Hurricane Classic in December. Syracuse played highly rated Miami, and star center Chuck Richards was out ill. Murray would get the start, and the Orangemen would play the Hurricanes to an 80-80 tie in regulation. The game would remain close in overtime, and Murray would hit a shot from the side of the court to win the game 86-85. He would have a season high 16 points in the game.
