Lawrence Moten was the classic swingman player, able to play shooting guard and small forward. From the moment he first stepped on the court as a freshman, Moten displayed tremendous court awareness. He was not the most athletic player on the court, but he always seemed to be in the right position, make the right pass, and make the crucial shots. He Lawrence Moten Syracuse Orangemen Basketball possessed a decent perimeter shot and a fast slashing move to the hoop that made him difficult to defend.

Moten never forced the action in the game, instead playing entirely within the flow of the game. Often a game would end and you would be surprised that he had 20 points. His smooth style of play earned him the moniker "Poetry in Moten".

It was not as if Moten wasn't recognized on the court. With is trademark knee high white socks, and silver dollar sized bald spot on the side of his head (due to stress), he was quite visible. He was the Big East Rookie of the Year his freshman season, earning 3rd Team Big East Honors, and helping Syracuse win the Big East Championship. He was a three time 1st Team Big East Selection, putting him in very rare company. By the time his career was completed, Moten was the all-time leading scorer in Big East history, along with being the All-time leading scorer in Syracuse history (surpassing Derrick Coleman).

Six times in his career he scored 30 or more points, with a career high of 36 versus Villanova in 1995.

He was drafted in the 2nd round (36th pick overall) by the NBA's Vancouver Grizzlies after graduation. Moten had three unspectacular seasons in the NBA, two with Vancouver, and one with the Washington Bullets.

After leaving the NBA, he played minor league ball in the United States in the CBA and ABA, and international basketball in Spain and Venezuela. He made the ABA All-Star team, and became vice president of player development for the ABA's Maryland Nighthawks. He would move into coaching as head coach of the Maryland Knighthawks and the Rochester RazorSharks in the Premier Basketball League (PBL).
