Billy Connors played one season of basketball for Syracuse University, a gifted playmaker and starter at guard. He was ruled ineligible to play the next season because of participation in a YMCA league the previous season. His greater success for Syracuse, and professionally, would be in baseball.
He helped lead Syracuse to a third place finish in the 1961 College World Series, the only season he lettered in baseball. He had five hits in CWS game with home runs in consecutive at bats.
As a child, he was a member of the 1953 Schenectady Little League World Series runner up team, and the 1954 Schenectady Little League World Champions. He was a Little League teammate of fellow Orangemen Ernie Lotano.
Out of college he signed with the Cubs, and played with the Cubs and Mets from 1966 to 1968. He was a minor league pitching coach for years. In 1980 he became a Major league pitching coach, a job he successfully held with many teams until 2000, including with a couple of Yankee World Championship teams of the late 90's. Afterwards, he became the Director of Player Personnel for the New York Yankees.
