Phil 'Pipes' Rakov played guard at Syracuse, alternating as a starter and a valuable reserve. He was a starting guard for the 1926 National Championship team. In 1924 he played for the Cultures amateur team in the Syracuse area, rather than for the Orangemen.
He would earn his medical degree at Syracuse, and Dr. Rakov would practice medicine in Syracuse for 60 years. In World War II he was a captain in the Army Medical Corps.
He had played two seasons of professional basketball in Rockford and Chicago from 1927 to 1929.
Rakov passed away in 2001, the last surviving member of the 1926 Championship team.
