Matt Lee was a sharp shooting forward who started three seasons for the Orangemen. He was known for his ability to consistently make the outside jump shots, and was probably the best perimeter shooter in the early years of the program.

Lee's older brother David was a forward at Syracuse for two seasons. Matt became a starting forward at the beginning of his sophomore season, essentially filling his brother's roll, but was academically ineligible to play in the second semester.

In a game against Oberlin during his junior season, Lee carried the Orange to victory scoring 22 of the teams 26 points, including the game winner, in a 26-25 win. Lee was hot that night, and admitted to having some lucky shots, but nevertheless carried the team to victory.

Lee was the captain of the Orangemen his senior season, and by far the best player that season. He led the team in scoring in every game but one (when he was ill and came off the bench), averaging nearly ten points per game. Lee was also the team's designated free throw shooter that year, taking all but one of the shots.
