John Unger was a beefy forward who played on the Syracuse varsity basketball team for one season. Unger came to Syracuse on a baseball scholarship, and lettered three times (1969, 1970, and 1971). He was a walk-on to the basketball team.
Unger average 9.0 points a game on the freshman team, along with 4.2 rebounds a game. He would play one season for the basketball team, as an occasional reserve his sophomore season. He would quit the team to focus on baseball.
Unger was the star catcher for the baseball team, occasionally playing first base. He hit .444 on the freshman team, and .339 for both his sophomore and junior seasons on the varsity. He also led the team in home runs both of those seasons. He had a hamstring injury his senior season that slowed him down.
Unger graduated from Syracuse in 1971. He was signed as a free agent by the Chicago Cubs and assigned to the Caldwell Cubs of the Pioneer League. He would hit .143 in 16 games as a catcher, with one home run. He would leave professional baseball after one season.[1]
Unger passed away in February of 2014.
