Herm Sawyer played one year of varsity basketball for Syracuse as a reserve guard. He was a starter early his senior season, but could not hold on to the position and was replaced by Nick Paul. He was a letterman on the Syracuse football team in 1919, as a half back and blocking back.
Sawyer would play one season in the NFL for the Rochester Jeffersonians in 1922. He played wingback and blocking back that season, though he never carried the ball.
