Dud Thorne was an outstanding athlete at Syracuse who played varsity basketball for one season. Thorne played forward for the basketball team, and also lettered in baseball, playing shortstop.
Thorne led the freshman team in scoring in 1938-1939 with 115 points. His sophomore year he would immediately earn a starting position, and would finish second in scoring on the team to Paul Kartluke. He would score 11 points in his first varsity game, a 54-36 romp over Toronto. He would have a career high 15 points in an overtime loss to Army in February. He was considered a fast player with good ball hawking skills on defense, and a solid offensive threat [1].
Thorne would leave school after his sophomore season for academic reasons.
