The Syracuse Orangemen and Vanderbilt Commodores first met in 1965. The Commodores would win 113-98 despite Syracuse's Dave Bing scoring 46 points and pulling down 13 rebounds.
The two schools would not meet again for 28 years until 1993, when the Orangemen beat Vanderbilt 78-62 behind Lawrence Moten.
