The Syracuse Orangemen and Sampson Naval Training Center played two games in the 1944-1945 season, and twice in the 1945-1946 season, splitting the series each year.

In 1950 the former Sampson Naval Training Center became Sampson Air Force Base. Syracuse played Sampson AFB in 1955. Legendary Syracuse football star Jim Brown scored a career high 33 points against Sampson in that game.

Sampson Naval Training Station had opened in 1942 and was used for training 411,000 recruits during World War II, along with sonar testing in Seneca Lake. The Naval Training Station closed in 1946. Sampson Air Force opened in 1950 and would close in 1956, and re-open as Seneca Army Airfield in 1957. Seneca would close in 2000.
