The Syracuse Orangemen and the Providence Friars first met in 1969. The two teams would only play twice before the creation of the Big East Conference in 1979-1980.
Syracuse would have a 46-9 record against Providence in Big East conference play. Despite the two teams being in the same conference for 34 years, they only met in the Big East Tournament three times; Syracuse would win two of those games and Providence one. Syracuse would win the first 20 games against Providence in Big East play, before the Friars won in 1990.
Syracuse and Providence met in the 1987 NCAA Final Four. Syracuse would win convincingly against the Friars that day, by a score of 77-63.
Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim has a record of 5-0 against Rick Pitino while he coached at Providence. Boeheim also had a record of 8-0 versus Joe Mullaney, 9-4 versus Rick Barnes, 5-2 versus Pete Gillen, and 7-2 against former SU assistant Tim Welsh.
Syracuse has won the last seven games of the series.
