The Syracuse Orangemen and Penn Quakers first met in 1902. The two teams played annually most seasons from 1906 to 1955, with a disruption from 1943 to 1948 because of World War II. The two teams have met four times since 1955, the last time being in 2006.

Syracuse won 8 consecutive games from 1910 to 1918, and the Quakers won 6 straight from 1918 to 1926. Syracuse would win eight straight again from 1935 to 1949. and Penn has won 5 of the past 7 games.

Syracuse was 14-3 against Quaker coach Lon Jourdet, 3-8 against Edward McNichol, and 2-3 against Howard Dallmar.
