The Syracuse Orangemen and Duquesne Dukes first met in 1949. This was the first time Syracuse ever played a top 20 AP team, with the Orangemen winning 65-58.

Duquesne and Syracuse would play in 1952 in the first game at Syracuse's new Archbold Stadium, a game the Dukes won 78-67. The two teams would not play again for another 24 years.
