The Syracuse Orange and Butler Bulldogs first met in the 2002 NIT Tournament. The Orangemen would win 66-65 in overtime behind Preston Shumpert's 36 points. The two teams last met in the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in 2010. Butler would win a close game, upsetting the favored Orange team, who was missing center Arinze Onuaku due to injury.
