The series started in 1918, and Syracuse would win three of the first five. The Syracuse Orangemen and Buffalo Bulls played most every season from 1961 to 1978. Buffalo won three straight games from 1961 to 1963. Syracuse would then win eighteen consecutive games from 1964 to 2017.

Former Syracuse star Art Powell coached Buffalo for 28 seasons from 1916-1943 with a 198-190 record. He was the first basketball coach for Buffalo, leading them to a 7-4 record in its first official season 1915-1916. Buffalo would go 2-10 against the Orangemen with Powell at the helm.

Buffalo declared for Division III status for the 1977-1978 season, and would remain at the level until 1991-1992, when it returned to Division I. The Bulls would start the 2018-2019 season 10-0 and rise to the rank of #14. They would beat Syracuse 71-59 behind C.J. Massinburg's 25 points.
