Comments:
Gerry McNamara would score a career high 43 points leading the Orangemen to a 80-75 win in the first round of the 2004 NCAA tournament.
BYU got off to a hot start hitting eight of their first ten three point shots. The Orangemen were struggling to score when McNamara started shooting and carrying the team. He would score 26 points in the first half, helping the Orangemen erase an eleven point deficit and tie the game 42-42 at the half.
Coach Jim Boeheim was concerned about the altitude and McNamara's asthma, and made a concentrated effort in the second half to have Hakim Warrick do a lot of the scoring. Warrick stepped up and scored sixteen of his twenty points in the second half.
Cougar big man Rafael Araujo did an excellent job of keeping BYU in the game. The game was tied 52-all at 14:21 when he picked his fourth foul going over Warrick's back. The Orangemen then had a 15-6 run to gain control of the game. BYU was able to hang around and threaten towards the end. However, McNamara made three out of four free throws in the last 30 seconds to seal the win. [1]
