Bill Erwig was an excellent athlete, who played guard at Syracuse for one season. Erwig was a star half back on the varsity football team, lettering in 1918 and 1919. He was a fast and powerful player.
In basketball he was a defensive guard, playing alongside John Barsha. He played with the reserve players in the 1918-1919 season, but was a starter early in the 1919-1920 season.
Erwig had played for the NFL's Rochester Jeffersonians in one game (October 17, 1920) as a left tackle.
