Tony Scott was a tall skinny shooter from Rochester, New York. He was touted as an outstanding perimeter shooter with a high arching shot, and was effective with limited playing time in the capacity of a perimeter shooter for two seasons. He was a valuable reserve during his sophomore season, averaging nearly 6 points a game. Unfortunately, his first two seasons saw him sit behind talented upper classmen such as Derrick Coleman and Stephen Thompson, and fellow classmates Billy Owens and Dave Johnson.
Scott would be a hero in the 1990 Big East Tournament. The Orangemen faced Pittsburgh in the first round, and Dave Johnson was unable to play. Scott would come off the bench to score 11 points, on a perfect night of shooting including three for three shooting from three point range, to help the Orangemen beat the Panthers 58-55. In the championship game against Connecticut he would shoot three of five from three point range, and have 12 points in 19 minutes off the bench. Unfortunately it was not enough this time as the Orangemen lost to UConn 79-75.
His Big East Tournament performance vaulted Scott into the starting lineup for the NCAA tournament. He would score 6 points in a first round blowout of Coppin State, and 9 points in a 63-61 victory over Virginia. In the third round Scott would have a terrible night shooting only 3-16 from the floor (including 2-11 from three point range) as the Orangemen lost to Minnesota 82-75.
Scott transferred to Texas A&M. He had to sit out one season due to transfer rules, and then was academically ineligible to play his junior season. Frustrated with college basketball, Scott declared himself eligible for the 1992 NBA draft, where he went undrafted. By NCAA rule, he was then ineligible to return to college, though he would have had a year of eligibility left.
Scott would later play basketball overseas in Turkey, Spain and China. In 2005 he played for the Rochester RazorSharks of the ABA.
