Sam Spann was a swingman for Syracuse for one season. While talented, his playing ability did not reach the caliber of Big East competition. His playing time expectations did not match those of coach Jim Boeheim's. Spann transferred to Fairfield University in January 1999 to play for Boeheim's former assistant Tim O'Toole.
Spann led Fairfield University in scoring and rebounding his junior season (2001), and was named to the MAAC Conference second team his senior season. Spann would score 902 points with the Stags, and 906 points in his collegiate career.
