Mert Raner played one season of basketball for Syracuse as a reserve. Raner was an infielder on the varsity baseball team, lettering in 1962, and also lettered in football in 1962. At Marcellus High School, Raner excelled in basketball, football, and baseball.
He would join the basketball team his junior season to help out with a depleted squad. Raner would play five games and score three points.
Raner would start coaching shortly after graduating for Syracuse. He would primarily coach basketball in a 25+ year coaching career that also saw him coach baseball and football. He also served as the Athletic Director for Marcellus High School.
