John Mustion was a forward on the Syracuse basketball team for two seasons. His real success at Syracuse was on the baseball team where he was a star pitcher and outfielder, lettering in 1959 and 1960.
Mustion would be a reserve on the basketball team both his sophomore and junior seasons, scoring a total of sixteen points.
Mustion would throw a no-hitter against Georgetown on March 31, 1959. It was the first game he pitched his sophomore season. He would strike out twelve Hoyas and walk four on his way to the win. He would leave college after his junior season, choosing to sign a professional contract.
Mustion would play four seasons of minor league baseball, from 1961-1964. He primarily played the outfield, pitching just once, but would never rise higher than the AA level with the Williamsport Mets in 1964, his last season. He would play for the Des Moines (1961), Chattanooga (1961), Williamsport-A (1962), Miami (1963), and Williamsport-AA in 1964. He would lead the Florida State league in hits with 143, and runs with 85 in the 1963 season for the Miami Marlins. He is said to be one of only three players to hit a home run out of Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia.[1]
Muston spent a long career in the financial services industry with CIGNA and Lincoln Financial.
Mustion passed away in October 2016. [1]
