Jim Hayes was a big physical center who was a seldom used reserve throughout his career.
Hayes came to Syracuse as a walk-on. He ended up redshirting his first year. Because of the combination of his size and skills, Coach Jim Boeheim offered him a scholarship after that season, and he would be a scholarship player for three years. Hayes had numerous knee surgeries which limited his mobility, both on offense and defense. In January of his sophomore season, he would break his wrist during practice and miss the rest of that season.
